How-to Install Ubuntu 9.10 on the Samsung NC10 netbook

Steps to installing a dual boot of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and Windows XP on the Samsung NC10 netbook.

1.  Upgrade the Samsung NC10 bios (be sure to follow the instrucions by clicking on the BIOS link)

2.  After installing the bios boot up Windows XP

3.  Download the Ubuntu Netmix image file  — PC (Intel x86) UNR live CD

4.  Download wubi.exe

5.  Put both files into the same Windows folder (ie, make a folder called something like “Wubi Install”)

6.  Run Wubi in the folder in #5.  Choose the Netbook Remix Option at the bottom left screen and it will install Ubuntu .. wait patiently

7.  After rebooting the computer choose the Ubuntu Netbook Remix Option after the boot screen.  You will not have wireless yet so you will need to plug in a working network cable to use the web.

8.  In Ubuntu goto System Administration at the bottom and choose Synaptic Package Manager

9.  – In the Search Box type in “ubuntu restricted extras” and click on it to mark the selection(s) for installation.
– In the Search Box type in “linux-backports-modules-karmic” and click on it to mark the selection(s) for installation.
–  Click the Apply button to install the selections.

10.  Now unplug the wired connection and click on the network icon on the tool bar at the top to the left of the date.  Make sure Wireless option is checked and you should see wireless hot spots show up.

We are done.  If you wish to install other software you can use Synpatic or the simpler Ubuntu Software Center found under Favorites.

One last thing.  It took me awhile to find my favorite Windows shortcut (windows key “m” which gets you right to the desktop without closing programs)
in Ubuntu.  The desktop shortcut in Ubuntu is <ctrl><alt><d>.
